MainStreet America Gala hits $1M mark for neurological research

In 2012, Barbara and Mike Feigin launched MainStreet America — a place where people can find anything they could possibly imagine for building, decorating or remodeling a home. To celebrate, they also established the MainStreet America Gala to support the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Chaired by Tracy and Richard Wilken, last year’s event raised more than $425,000, bringing the total giving from this special event to $1,000,000.

The theme of the evening — Changing Lives, Building for the Future — epitomizes the goal of the NRI as well. Under the direction of Dr. Huda Y. Zoghbi, researchers at the NRI are working to accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into new, effective treatments for patients. Philanthropic support has been a big part of their success.

Ernie Manouse served as celebrity host and emcee/auctioneer for the special evening, entertaining the 265 guests in attendance. NRI scientists Drs. Mingshan Xue and Xiaolong Jiang presented the latest research advances related to several neurological disorders, including autism, epilepsy, bipolar disorder and Rett syndrome.

Gala attendees included Drs. Huda and William Zoghbi; Jan Duncan; Cynthia and Tony Petrello; Shirley and Ralph Alexander; Debbie and Dr. Steve Sukin; Missy and Wayne Herndon; Lisa and Mark Stewart; Sherry and Richard Lane; Roberta and Lee Schwartz; Dr. Steven Siegelbaum; and Drs. Beth and Arthur Sands.
